The "mysterious" aspects of this journey are mostly personal. This is not "Indiana Jones" or a recognizable form of "adventure travel". The writer was a well-known writer and journalist in his day, and the travels described are those of a cultured, well-off, well-traveled individual who attended dinner parties with notables, toured schools and factories, met with aristocrats, diplomats, artists, bankers, industrialists, business tycoons, etc.. A fair amount of the book is spent discussing many of what were then current events. These observations and opinions may still have some historical interest for someone curious about 1920's social and political opinions about Japan, immigration, foreign, race and trade relations, etc.. However, what I found most enjoyable and interesting was the actual travel-writing, which turns out to be most of the book: As he traveled to various "sights" and events, Mr. Street also met with numerous perfectly ordinary people and took a lively interest in them. The minutiae of japanese life and customs end up as the real "mysteries" which he tries his best to unravel. True - he got help from translators, professors "old diplomatic hands", officials, litteratti, men and women in the street, and whoever else came along the way. But his interest appears genuine, to me, and the results are engaging. He digs into a miscellany of topics, from woodcut art, to japanese baths, kimonos, geisha parties. He describes the world and ways of Sumo wrestling, observes the life of fishing villages, comments on tipping etiquette, servants, family relations, labor relations, conventional business practices, japanese puns, and much more. Could have some photos and maps in this book but its all hidden in the text.It is good value though.
Good Read
Most interesting for historical context.
The author Julian Street is exceptionally honest with his observations of the Japanese people and their way of life in Japan. I have been to Okinawa Japan six times and the main land, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto,and Osaka as a friend and guest of a prominent family and understand clearly the mannerisms that he describes so well in detail. Granted the book was written around 1922; however, Japan remains Japanese in spirit. Very good book for understanding the Japanese people as they try to interact with the industry and culture of the west.
Wonderful book for anyone interested in how today's Japan evolved from yesterday's. Written shortly after Japan opened up to the world, the author, Julian Street, talks about Tokyo as being a town of two-story wooden buildings with open fronts (both residences and shops) filled with cute little people in kimono, clopping around on wooden geta. He has introductions to both westerners and Japanese in high places and so is sometimes entertained royally - geisha parties, beautiful private homes, and given introductions to important people. He predicts that because of the earthquake danger Tokyo will never have tall buildings for housing or business because they would be dangerous and fall down. This man is a clear and enjoyable writer looking intelligently at everything Japan - from the language to the family to the communal baths and the interesting food. He traveled widely in Japan before there were many miles of railroad and accomplished many of his explorations in wooden carts - a few 'motor cars,' but little else. He is sensible about observing the culture and society, keeping an open mind and willingness to look into and try almost anything. Heartily recommended. The book was written more than 100 years ago and yet reads as fresh as this morning's newspaper. It takes us to an almost unimaginable Japan, the near past.
