PRIDE BEFORE A FALL

Lovely Margaret Steward is a proud and spirited young lady--too proud to accept the unwilling hospitality of her only living relative. But in strait-laced New Orleans early in the 19th century, there were few means for a respectable young woman to make her own way in the world--which is why Margaret comes as governess to the forbidding Villars mansion.

Given into her charge is a child seemingly possessed by satanic evil. Invading her dreams is the darkly handsome, fierce-tempered man who employs her. And closing in on her are hate and fear and mystery, as the dark abyss of a sinister past opens to receive her.

The Court of the Thorn Tree Classic Gothics Collection Book 5 eBook Jennifer Blake

A long-time fan of Jennifer Blake's historical romances with more romantic titles than THE COURT OF THE THORN TREE, I admit I allowed this not so passionate sounding title to make me overlook this wonderful book earlier. That was truly my loss. Don't be fooled by the title. The thorny locust tree in the courtyard of the Villars home in old New Orleans is deeply entwined in their lives, loves, pain, pleasures and deep dark secrets born from a tempestuous past. Margaret, the heroine, has no idea what an adventure she's in for when she applies for the position of governess. Her feisty, troubled charge, little Amelina, a product of Charles Villars' first marriage to rebellious beauty Blanche, turns out to be the ultimate challenge. Amelina's father, Charles, a proper Creole gentleman, and his free-spirited, disreputable brother-in-law, Raoul, share enough tension in the house already. Living in the same quarters with Margaret increases the two men's loathing for one another until their strong emotions escalate to a fever pitch level.

Is it coincidence that in "the language of trees" the locust tree symbolizes "affection beyond the grave?" This is only one of the many intriguing secrets I unlocked as I read THE COURT OF THE THORN TREE. You'll find yourself rooting for Margaret and hoping she'll end up with true love beyond the grave, a love that lasts for all time. But which man in the house--Charles or Raoul--is her soul mate? Or might the wise old Scottish doctor that makes mysterious visits to the Villars house in the night already know?

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough in this powerfully written book to see what happens next. The ending was explosively exciting and surprising as finally the stormy secrets of the Villars household erupt like a long overdue summer storm.

An emotional thriller with romance, danger and mystery clinging to each page, tantalizing your senses like the sweet-smelling ivory blossoms on the locust tree, this story is a VERY satisfying read. Run, don't walk, to enter Jennifer Blake's THE COURT OF THE THORN TREE.

The Court of the Thorn Tree Classic Gothics Collection Book 5 eBook Jennifer Blake Reviews

I am a big fan of Ms Blake and have enjoyed most of her books. This book appears to be the second book she wrote from the early 1970s, before she found her real voice in literature.

As another reviewer stated, it was Jane Eyre in Louisiana all over again. I knew what was going to happen before it happened, so I was very disappointed in the book.

Ms Blake's books have improved drastically over the years, and I look forward to reading more. If you have not read Jane Eyre, you will might enjoy this book although I felt it lacking in connection between the H and the h.
Not what I expected. Pretty predictable and boring...
This is one of Jennifer Blake's best. A dark Gothic with suspense, romance and an ending with a very surprising twist.
This story was a fast moving novel of intrigue, hatred, and love. You knew that love was hidden deep in the folds, and came out in the end.
I was unable to care about ANY of the characters. Most unlike my experiences with Jennifer Blake's books. There was not even a satisfactory gothic atmosphere. Not worth the time it took to read it.
This was a good read with a little mystery of the gothic kind accompanied by some romance sprinkled in in the form of a dark brooding male employer. Not a very original storyline about a governess, an unruly child and a dark forbodding father. However well told and held the readers interest.
The book most certainly held my interest, though I had the mystery solved in my head. My one complaint is the endless detail of surroundings. I half expected to learn the thread count of the bedding. While I appreciate the scene being set there is a point where enough is enough.

Margaret had lived with her uncle, however he had taken a wife -- and the wife wanted Margaret out. None of the men introduced to her caught her interest so the only respectable option was to find work as a governess.

The Villars household hadn't been able to keep a governess. The little girl was difficult and the household forbidding. The family had little to no social life. Charles, the head of the household, was a widower. His father, two aunts, the brother and half-sister of his deceased wife all resided with him. A few of the servants had been with the family for years and knew all the secrets.

Margaret experiences attempts on her life as she tries to develop a bond with her charge. And she also finds she is developing feelings for her employer. She is attracted to him but a little wary as well. The brother-in-law is flirtatious. There are moments when Margaret could have used better judgment in her dealings with him.

The story is a good one.
